WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's basketball team will take on the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers (8-1) on Thursday evening at 7 p.m. at McDonough Arena. The Hoyas are 4-3 overall after downing Florida International University last week.
Junior guard Dionna White (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill) was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll the league announced on Monday. It was the second weekly honor for the Hoyas this season and the fifth of her career. In the Hoyas’ lone game of the week, a 77-56 victory over FIU, White eclipsed the 1,000-career point mark with 24 points, adding a career-high 13 rebounds, four assists and three steals in the victory.
Georgetown has three Hoyas averaging in double figures. White is averaging 17.6 ppg, ranking fourth in the BIG EAST, to go along with 7.0 rpg and a league-high 17 steals. Senior guard Mikayla Venson (Arlington, Va./Yorktown) is second on the squad with 13.0 ppg as well as 2.9 rpg. Senior forward Cynthia Petke (Yaounde, Cameroon/-/Chipola) is averaging a double-double with 12.6 ppg and 11.7 rpg.
Georgetown is outrebounding opponents by a 3.6 rpg margin to rank second in the BIG EAST and also has a +4.1 turnover margin.
The Gophers turned in their third-best undefeated start in program history, 7-0, their best since starting 15-0 in the Final Four season of 2003-04. The team has four players scoring in double figures as transfer Kenisha Bell leads the way with 19.2 ppg. Destiny Pitts is averaging a double-double with 12.6 ppg as well as 10.4 rpg. The Gophers are defeating teams by a margin of +17.9 ppg and also hold a + 9.6 rebounding margin. Minnesota’s lone loss of the season was an 88-83 setback at North Carolina.
The Hoyas are 1-2 all-time against the Golden Gophers and 1-0 at home. Last season, GU fell, 68-60, in the Twin Cities. The Hoyas scored in double figures in the loss as White led the way with 18. Both Faith Woodard and Dorothy Adomako (Midlothian, Va./Cosby) posted double-doubles in the contest. The last meeting at McDonough Arena was a 72-65 Hoya victory on December 4, 1998.
