WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's basketball team will close out non-conference play on Saturday at the University of Florida in a 2 p.m. tilt. The game will be broadcast live on SunSports in the Gainesville area with Mick Hubert on the call and Steffi Sorensen doing play-by-play. The Hoyas are coming off a trip to the Puerto Rico Classic and gearing up for BIG EAST play.
Last week, the Blue & Gray dropped a pair of games at the Puerto Rico Classic in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The Hoyas battled back from a deficit against the Spartans of Michigan State, but couldn't find a way to move ahead falling, 67-54. Georgetown had three in double figures with senior captain Andrea White (Lancaster, Va./Lancaster) posting the double-double with 14 points and 12 boards.
In the second contest, the Hoyas fell in a last-second heartbreaker to the Lady Hilltoppers from Western Kentucky, 57-55. Both White and freshman center Natalie Butler (Fairfax Station, Va./Lake Braddock) managed double-doubles in the loss.
White is leading the team in scoring with 14.5 ppg and 8.9 rpg. Butler is second in points first in rebounds averaging a double-double with 14.5 ppg and 12.3 rpg. Sophomore guard Katie McCormick (Leonardtown, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) is averaging 11.9 ppg, and senior captain Samisha Powell (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne) has a squad-high 44 assists.
The Gators are 9-3 overall and have won their last five-consecutive games. The team most recently won the Gator Holiday Classic with victories over Tennessee State (86-56) and Florida International (90-74). Florida has five players averaging double figures with Jaterra Bonds leading the way with 15.9 ppg. Kayla Lewis is the top rebounder with 8.8 rpg as well as 10.7 ppg. The Gators are currently receiving votes in the USA Today Coaches Poll.
Georgetown is 1-2 all-time against the Gators as well as 1-0 on the road. The last meeting was on December 7, 1997 at McDonough Arena where the Blue & Gray fell 74-63. The last time GU played in Gainesville, the Hoyas won by a score of 78-75 on December 4, 1996.
