Women’s Basketball Defeated by San Diego
SAN DIEGO, CALIF. – Georgetown University’s women’s basketball team (6-3) lost in the first round of the third annual Surf-N-Slam Tournament to host University of San Diego (5-6) 65-58.
The Hoyas had four starters register double-digit points, led by Carmen Bruce (Pittsburgh, Pa./Schenley) with 14. Varda Tamoulianis (Moscow, Russia/Academy of Labour and Social Relations) scored 13 followed by Bethany LeSueur (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) with 11 and All-America candidate Rebekkah Brunson (Oxon Hill, Md./Oxon Hill) with 10. San Diego also had four players hit for 10 or more, led by Polly Dong’s 17.
With just over three minutes to play, the contest was knotted at 52 before USD’s Dong hit her third three of the game to give San Diego a lead it would not lose the remainder of the game. The Toreros hit six free throws in the final two minutes to keep Georgetown on the losing end. Brunson scored eight of her points in the final 20 and ended the night with a team high seven rebounds.
Georgetown opened the game with LeSueur scoring the Hoyas’ first five points and held the lead for the first nine minutes. USD used three tri-fectas to open a 15-13 lead with eight minutes remaining. The Hoyas posted 10 points in the period’s final five minutes and entered the break up one, 27-26.
For the game the Hoyas hit 44.8% from the field compared to USD’s 37.9%. But the Toreros sank 42.9% from downtown and GU only hit 12.5%. Georgetown lost the battle of the boards 43-32.
In the consolation round of the Surf-N-Slam Georgetown will face the loser of Maryland and #4/3 Texas Tech on Tuesday, December 30th, at 6 p.m. (PST)
