WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's basketball team will open BIG EAST Conference play on Wednesday as the squad hosts the Creighton University Bluejays at 4 p.m., at McDonough Arena. The Hoyas finished non-conference play with a mark of 6-6 overall under first-year Head Coach Jim Lewis.
On Saturday, the Blue & Gray suffered its second-consecutive two-point loss with a tough 67-65 overtime decision at the University of Florida to close out non-conference play. The Hoyas led for much of the game, but the short bench and solid shooting from the Gators was too much to stop on the road.
Freshmen led the way as center Natalie Butler (Fairfax Station, Va./Lake Braddock) posted 16 points and 18 rebounds, while guard Jade Martin (Bloomington, Minn./John F. Kennedy) scored 16 points including three 3-pointers in the contest. The Blue & Gray shot 41.4 percent in the game and also outrebounded the Gators, 52-34.
Leading the way for the Hoyas is Butler with 14.6 ppg as well as a BIG EAST-leading 12.8 rpg. Senior forward Andrea White (Lancaster, Va./Lancaster) is second with 14.1 ppg and sophomore guard Katie McCormick (Leonardtown, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) rounds out those in double figures with 11.9 ppg.
The team is outrebounding opponents by more than 10.0 rpg and shooting 41.7 percent on the season from the field.
Creighton is 7-6 on the season and 1-0 in BIG EAST Conference play after defeating Villanova, 65-58, on Saturday. Marissa Janning, McKenzie Fujan and Sarah Nelson combined for 51 of Creighton's 65 points, and four clutch free throws from freshman Lauren Works down the stretch helped the Bluejays to the win. It was the first game in the BIG EAST for CU.
This is the first meeting between the teams.
Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m., at McDonough Arena. Live stats and a webcast featuring Ryan Sakamoto will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
