Melissa Vassalotti returns for her second season as the assistant head coach of women's field hockey. She was named assistant head coach on June 11, 2012.

Vassalotti, a Huntingdon Valley, Pa. native, works primarily with the Hoya's defensive and goalkeeping units. GU returns one goalkeeper and gains two freshman keepers for the 2013 season.

"Melissa's work ethic and energy make her vital to our program," Head Coach Tiffany Hubbard said. "She has been very successful at a high level and her experiences are great for the development of our goalies and back line." Vassalotti wrapped up her collegiate career by earning a selection to the NFHCA All-Mid Atlantic Region Second Team.

Vassalotti earned playing time in goal during all four years in College Park, posting a career record of 32-4. As a starter during her final two seasons, she led the squad to consecutive National Championships and a 2010 ACC Championship. She posted a career high in saves in the 2011 semi-final game and then topped that performance in the National Championship final with a career high eight saves.

Vassalotti graduated from the University of Maryland in December 2011 after a championship senior season.

Following graduation, Vassalotti trained in Chula Vista, Calif. with the USA Women's National Team for five months from January to May in 2012.

In 2012 and 2013, she competed in the Women's National Championship with the New Jersey High Performance team, where the top 24 players are selected for the National Squad from 100 athletes. Her team took first place in 2012.

Prior to Maryland, she attended Saint Basil Academy (Pa.), where she holds the school's career record with 695 saves and was a United States Field Hockey Association Futures Participant.
