Melissa Vassalotti was named assistant head coach on June 11, 2012.

Vassalotti begins her coaching career on the Hilltop, after leading University of Maryland to back-to-back National Championships as the starting goalkeeper in 2010 and 2011.

Vassalotti, a Huntingdon Valley, Pa. native, will work primarily with the Hoya's experienced defensive and goalkeeping units. GU loses just one starter on defense and returns both goalies from the 2011 season.

"Melissa's work ethic and energy will make her an excellent addition to our program," Head Coach Tiffany Marsh said. "She has been very successful at a high level and her experiences will be great for the development of our goalies and back line."

Vassalotti just wrapped up her collegiate career by earning a selection to the NFHCA All-Mid Atlantic Region Second Team, following a championship senior season. She has spent the last three months in Chula Vista, Calif. training with the USA National Team, and recently competed in the Women's National Championships where her N.J. team took first place.

Vassalotti earned playing time in goal during all four years in College Park, posting a career record of 32-4. As a starter during her final two seasons, she led the squad to consecutive National Championships and a 2010 ACC Championship. Vassalotti was at her best in big games, tying a career-high with eight saves in the NCAA Finals against No. 1 North Carolina in 2011. In 2010, she had at least four saves in each game during the Terps' NCAA Tournament run, helping the team win the ACC and NCAA titles.

Prior to Maryland, she attended Saint Basil Academy (Pa.), where she holds the school's career record with 695 saves and was a United States Field Hockey Association Futures Participant.

Vassalotti earned her Bachelors of Science in Kinesiology from the University of Maryland in 2012.
