Hoyas Downed by Richmond in Field Hockey

Freshman Emily Weinberg scored her first goal as a Hoya at Richmond.

WASHINGTON - Georgetown University's field hockey team (1-3) played its second game of the Labor Day weekend at Richmond (3-1) on Sunday and lost 8-1. GU's lone goal was netted by freshman Emily Weinberg (Shaker Heights, Ohio/Hathaway Brown).

The Spiders jumped to an early 2-0 lead in the game's first 11 minutes and held a 4-0 advantage at halftime. The Hoyas Briana Pereira (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) faced 16 shots in the half and recorded five saves.

In the second half the Spiders posted two more goals before GU's Weinberg broke the shutout with a score off a corner from senior Laura Thistle (Philadelphia, Pa./Mount Saint Joseph Academy). The Hoya defense held Richmond to just nine shots in the final half and used sophomore Emma Hamstra (Ann Arbor, Mich./Ann Arbor Pioneer) in goal. Hamstra was credited with four saves.

With a 1-3 record Georgetown heads West for a two game stint in St. Louis, Missouri. GU plays Missouri State on Saturday, September 8 at 1 p.m. On Sunday, September 9, the Hoyas play at Saint Louis University also at 1 p.m.
