Hoyas Defeat St. Louis 4-1 to Close Road Trip

Catherine Shugrue was the team leader against SLU with a goal and an assist.

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University field hockey team (2-4) scored five minutes into its game against St. Louis (1-6) and built a 3-0 halftime lead before defeating the Billikens 4-1. The victory snapped a four game losing streak for the Hoyas.

"It was our best overall game of the season. The team stuck to the game plan and played as a cohesive unit," commented Head CoachTiffany Marsh. "It was an important game as we head into our first BIG EAST game this Friday."

Georgetown jumped to a 1-0 lead five minutes into the game when GU's leading scorer senior Kimberly Keating (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Merion Mercy Academy) scored an unassisted goal. Just over 10 minutes later first year player Meghan Murphy (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) netted her first of the season off a pass from senior Laura Thistle (Philadelphia, Pa./Mount Saint Joseph Academy). Catherine Shugrue (Devon, Pa./Episcopal Academy) finished off the first half scoring seven minutes before the break off an assist from Annie Wilson (Darien, Conn./Darien). GU's defense stymied the Billikens holding them to four shots in the half.

The final half started similar to the first as GU's Shugrue and Wilson combined for Shugrue's second goal of the game five minutes in. St. Louis got on the board with 20 minutes to play. Hoya keeper Briana Pereira (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) limited the Billikens to only one goal by making five total saves.

After three straight weekends of road games Georgetown hosts BIG EAST opponent Providence at 4 p.m. on Friday, September 14. The game will be played in College Park, Md. at the University of Maryland's Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex.
