WASHINGTON – Georgetown University’s Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Lee Reed announced the hiring of Shannon (Karl) Soares as the school’s new field hockey coach on Friday.
“We’re excited to have Shannon join our program and to lead the field hockey team,” said Reed. “She’s a bright, young coach who has led teams to success on the field and in the classroom. Shannon will be committed to the development of our student-athletes and I’m very excited to have her join us on the Hilltop.”
Soares comes to Georgetown after spending the last year as the Assistant Director of Sport Operations at the University of Washington.
Before Washington, Soares served as Virginia Commonwealth University’s head coach from November 2011 to May 2013.
Soares, a Centreville, Va. native, led VCU to a 13-6 record in her first year as head coach during the 2012 season and earned the program’s first berth to the Atlantic 10 Tournament. The team’s 2012 finish ranked as the third-best turnaround in Division I field hockey that year after going 5-13 in the 2011 season.
"I’d like to thank Director of Athletics, Lee Reed and his administration for the opportunity to lead the Georgetown Field Hockey squad,” said new Head Coach Shannon (Karl) Soares. “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with a very special group of student-athletes who make up the Hoya Field Hockey family. I look forward to helping build a culture that values hard work and energy both in the classroom and on the playing field. The future of Georgetown Field Hockey is bright and I'm excited to be a part of it."
Soares’ team posted the highest GPA in VCU’s athletic department for fall 2012 with a 3.43 semester GPA and a 3.47 cumulative GPA.
Of her 20 student-athletes on the VCU field hockey team, 17 were named to the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll, 10 to the Dean’s List and 14 to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association All-Academic Team.
Prior to becoming head coach at VCU, Soares served as the program’s assistant coach for five seasons.
The 2006 graduate of William & Mary earned a bachelor of arts degree in kinesiology while being a leader and four-year letterwinner on the field hockey team. The former midfielder went 47-33 as a member of the team. She played in 80 games, starting in 78 of them. Soares served as a tri-captain of the squad her senior season and accumulated nine goals, 18 assists and 36 points in her four year collegiate career. Her 18 career assists still rank tied for fifth all-time at William & Mary.
Soares also earned a master of science degree from the University of Louisville in sport administration in 2007.
