Georgetown Field Hockey Ends Losing Streak Against Radford in Overtime Win
October 16, 2004
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Georgetown Field Hockey (3-11) defeated Radford (5-8) on Saturday afternoon on Kehoe Field by a final score of 1-0 in overtime, ending their eight-game losing streak.
The game was a defensive battle between the two teams as both were unable to find the back of the net through the two regulation periods. The great defensive play of Caitlin Bump (Barrytown, N.Y./Emma Willard School) and Caroline Cole (Boston Mass./Buckingham Browne & Nichols) kept the Hoyas deadlocked with Radford through regulation, as they allowed only five shots on goal on eight Radford shots. Goalies Abby Winer (Rising Sun, Md./Rising Sun) and Caitlyn Faller (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) shared time in net, with Winer tallying 44 minutes and two saves and Faller tallied 22 minutes and five saves. The 1-0 victory was the first shutout of the season for the Hoyas and was also the first overtime game and victory of the year.
The second half of play, along with overtime, saw the Hoyas dominate the majority of possession, which lead to the overtime win. The sudden victory game-winning goal was scored by senior captain Meghan Leahy (Windham, N.H./St. Paul's School) off an assist by junior Megan Carroll (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) at the 67:28 minute mark. The goal was Leahy’s second of the year and first game-winning goal of the season.Georgetown takes on Holy Cross on Sunday, October 17 on Kehoe Field at 1 p.m.
