Kristen Volpe Named to BIG EAST Second Team

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Georgetown field hockey senior captain Kristen Volpe was named to the BIG EAST Field Hockey second team, when the conference announced its awards during the 2009 field hockey awards banquet held in conjunction with the BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship to be played this weekend. Volpe becomes the first Hoya to earn post-season BIG EAST honors.

Volpe, who was twice named to the BIG EAST weekly honor roll has led Georgetown in goals during the past two seasons. She scored 10 goals and had seven assists to lead GU during the 2009 season, becoming just the fourth Hoya this decade to reach the 10-goal mark in a season.

Volpe scored a goal and had an assist in Georgetown's victory over Rutgers on September 25, the Hoyas first victory over a BIG EAST opponent in program history. She also scored a goal in the Hoyas victory over Radford in the season-finale.

UConn's Loren Sherer was named the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year, while her teammate Melissa Gonzalez was named the Defensive Player of the Year. Louisville's Heather Bustanoby was named the Goalkeeper of the Year and Syracuse's Ange Bradleyd named the Coach of the Year.
