Four Women’s Golfers Earn All-BIG EAST Honors

April 20, 2017

WASHINGTON - Four Georgetown University women’s golfers were selected to the 2017 All-BIG EAST Teams, including three on the first team. The selections were made by the league’s head coaches, who were not permitted to vote for their own players.

The conference made the announcement prior to the BIG EAST Women’s Golf Championship, which is being held from April 21-23 at Callawassie Island, S.C.

The BIG EAST Player of the Year, Freshman of the Year and Coaching Staff of the Year will be announced after the BIG EAST Championship.

Junior Jacquelyn Eleey (Quincy, Mass./Taft) and sophomores Christina Parsells (Bernardsville, N.J./Kent Place) and Alexa Popowitz (Boca Raton, Fla./St. Andrew’s) were selected to the All-BIG EAST First Team, while freshman Ashley Fitzgibbons (Sammamish, Wash./Sammamish) was named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team.

This is the third All-BIG EAST selection for Eleey, who won the conference championship in 2015 as a freshman and was selected as the league’s Freshman of the Year. Eleey is third on the team in stroke average at 75.70 and has three top-5 finishes and four among the top-20 this year.

Parsells earns All-BIG EAST First Team honors for the second-straight year. She is second on the team with a 75.18 stroke average and has four top-10 finishes in six tournaments.

Popowitz is the highest-ranked player by the Golfstat Player Head-to-Head Rankings going into this weekend’s BIG EAST Championship. She has seven top-20 finishes this year and is coming off a win at the Hoya Invitational, her first collegiate win. Popowitz, who was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Year last season, leads the team with a 75.12 stroke average.

Fitzgibbons has appeared in all 10 tournaments this year and is tied with Popowitz for the team lead in rounds played (26). She carries a 76.73 stroke average and has two top-10 finishes and three among the top-20.

Under the direction of sixth-year Head Coach Katie Brophy, Georgetown has had six players earn 10 All-BIG EAST honors, including six first team accolades. Three golfers – Eleey, Popowtiz and Jenny Xiao – have been named BIG EAST Freshman of the Year under Brophy’s direction.
