Junior Courtney Caputo scored two goals against Cincinnati.
March 22, 2013
WASHINGTON - Georgetown University's No. 8/8 women's lacrosse team (6-2; 1-0) found itself behind 3-2 against Cincinnati (4-3; 0-1) before exploding for 19 unanswered goals and a 21-3 win. It was the conference opener for both squads and Georgetown recorded its largest margin of victory ever in a BIG EAST matchup and tied its second largest victory margin ever only behind a 23-2 win against Wilson in 1980.
"We got off to a slow start due to a lack of communication between players," commented Head Coach Ricky Fried. "Then once we started talking and sliding better we were able to regroup. Our draw controls once again helped us control the game and did not allow Cincinnati to generate any more momentum."
The scoring was spread out for the Hoyas as 13 different players netted goals and five players added at least one assist. Corinne Etchison (Eldersberg, Md./McDonogh School) led the Blue and Gray with four points (1g, 3a). Seven Hoyas had two or more goals with Hannah Franklin (Phoenix, Md./McDonogh School) scoring a team high three. Georgetown outshot Cincy 36 to 5 and won 18-of-26 draws. GU finished 4-of-7 on free position shots and was 8-of-8 on clears.
Franklin netted a free position goal less than a minute into the game after the Hoyas forced a failed clear. Cincinnati responded to tie the game before Sophia Thomas (Lutherville, Md./Maryvale Prep) cut through the middle of Cincy's defense to regain the lead. Two unanswered by the Bearcats allowed Cincinnati to own a 3-2 advantage less than nine minutes into the contest. That would be the last time Cincinnati would find the back of the net for the remainder of the game.
Georgetown responded with a 19 goal run spanning both halves. Kelyn Freedman (Newtown Square, Pa./Radnor) tied the game off a pass from Etchison and then Etchison had another assist to Erin Lovett (Wantagh, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) less than a minute later and Georgetown regained the lead at the 20 minute mark and never looked back.
Two goals from Franklin and one each from Etchison, Farrell, Reilly Woodman (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephen's and St. Agnes) and Caroline Tarzian (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) over the course of the next 15 minutes gave the Hoyas a 10-3 lead. The final five minutes of the first half saw Mollie Caputo (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville Manlius) score her first two tallies of the season. Corcoran and Freedman added one apiece in that timeframe to give the Blue and Gray a 14-3 halftime edge.
In the second half both teams made a switch at goalie with GU subbing senior Abby Bisbee (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr School) in for starting keeper Barb Black (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls). Also seeing time in goal for the final 14 minutes was freshman Megan McDonald (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) and she made her career first save.
Tarzian got the goals rolling two minutes into the second half after weaving through the Cincy defense for her second score on the day. Farrell teamed up with Lovett and Kelsi Bozel (Hunt Valley, Md./Notre Dame Prep) scored unassisted to up GU's lead to 17-3. Sophomore Sammy Giordano (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) then took a Corcoran pass and recorded her first goal with just over 20 minutes to play. Giordano then assisted Woodman before junior Courtney Caputo (Philadelphia, Pa./Springside School) hit for two scores in the game's final minutes.
The Hoyas next host fellow BIG EAST opponent No. 20/20 Louisville, on Sunday, March 24 at 1 p.m.
