WASHINGTON - The No. 15/12 Georgetown University women's lacrosse squad fell, 7-6, to the No. 7/6 University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish (12-2, 5-2 BIG EAST) on Saturday in double overtime at Multi-Sport Field. The Hoyas had chances near the end, but couldn't capitalize on opportunities to drop to 8-6 overall and 4-3 in the BIG EAST Conference.
"I'm really disappointed in the loss," said Georgetown Head Coach Ricky Fried. "I thought our defense played really well, probably the best it has all year, and it's unfortunate to have the opportunities that we had and not come away with a win."
The Blue & Gray had opportunities during the extra minutes with four good shots at the cage. Georgetown had two shots in the first overtime and two in the second, but couldn't connect.
A turnover as the seconds ticked away, proved costly as Notre Dame picked it up and sprinted down the left side of the field to find the back of the net making the final, 7-6.
The Irish opened the game with a goal, and the Hoyas answered after an early drought. Junior midfielder Sophia Thomas (Lutherville, Md./Maryvale Prep) connected on GU's first goal of the game at 11:34 to tie it at one.
Notre Dame added another at 5:13, but just before the half's end junior midfielder Kelsi Bozel (Hunt Valley, Md./Notre Dame) hit an unassisted goal to tie it a two going into the break.
The Hoyas opened the second half with a pair of scores to take the largest lead of the game for either side. Freshman attacker Caroline Tarzian (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) connected on a free position shot at 20:34 and sophomore midfielder Hannah Franklin (Phoenix, Md./McDonogh School) weaved her way into the middle to make it 4-2.
The Irish weren't finished, however, winning consecutive draw controls and scoring on the ensuing possession for two goals in just 12 seconds to tie it at four.
Franklin scored her second of the after at 8:35, but once again the Irish found a way tallying two goals to take a 6-5 lead.
With 2:54 remaining, junior attacker Rosie Corcoran (Point Lookout, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) notched her first goal of the year on the assist from Thomas to tie it at six and force the overtime periods.
The Hoyas outshot the Irish, 32-27, and picked up 18 ground balls to UND's 15. Georgetown also held the advantage in draw controls, 9-8.
The defense played a solid game forcing 13 Irish turnovers. Sophomore goalkeeper Barb Black (Ruxton, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) tallied a career-best 12 saves on the afternoon.
The Hoyas will close out nonconference play with a game at the No. 4/5 University of Maryland on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
"Looking forward, we need to make sure that we're playing on both ends of the field," said Fried. "We're capable, we have the ability to do it, but we need to play with more confidence than we did today on the offensive end."
