WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's lacrosse team fell to the No. 2/2 University of Florida Gators (15-2, 9-0 BIG EAST), 15-3, in the season finale on Saturday at Donald Dizney Stadium in Gainesville, Fla. With the loss, the Hoyas end the regular season with a mark of 9-8 overall and 7-2 in BIG EAST Conference play.
Sophomore attackers Morgan Ryan (Maplewood, N.J./Oak Knoll School) and Taylor Gebhardt (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) as well as senior attacker Kate Snouffer (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr School) each had a goal in the contest, and junior midfielder Georgia Tunney (Towson, Md./Notre Dame Prep) was credited with an assist.
The Hoyas were outshot, 36-17, and pulled in nine draw controls to Florida’s 11. Both teams managed two free position goals. On defense, each squad tallied nine saves apiece.
The game was back and forth in the opening minutes as neither squad could gain an advantage. Florida scored just 23 seconds in, but Georgetown answered at 26:31 with a free position goal from Gebhardt to tie it at one.
The Gators matched the Hoyas with a free position goal a minute later to regain the lead. A Florida card gave the Blue & Gray the man-up advantage and Georgetown was able to capitalize as Ryan hit a goal on the assist from Tunney to tie the game at 2 with 23:08 remaining in the first.
That would be the last of the scoring in the first for the Blue & Gray, however, as Florida put together a 6-0 run spanning the remainder of the half to move ahead, 8-2, at the break.
The Gators remained hot opening the second half with a 5-0 run. The Hoyas finally found the back of the cage at 18:17 as Snouffer buried a free position shot to make it 13-3.
That would be the last goal for the Hoyas as GU could not find a comeback. Florida added two more as the running clock ticked down and Georgetown eventually fell, 15-3.
The Hoyas will now prepare for the BIG EAST Championship next weekend. The second-seeded Hoyas will face third-seeded Denver on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Villanova Stadium in a semifinal matchup.
