Senior captain Ashley Hunter scored her career first goal.

WASHINGTON - An early lead for No. 6/6 Georgetown University's women's lacrosse team (13-5) did not hold up for the second consecutive game against No. 5/5 Syracuse (16-3) and the Hoyas lost in the BIG EAST Women's Lacrosse finals 14-7. Syracuse won its fourth straight against the Hoyas and defeated GU for the third time in the championship game.
"We came out with the right intensity to begin the game," stated Head Coach Ricky Fried. "We did not keep the intensity up as the game wore on and Syracuse earned the victory."
Three Hoyas earned All-Tournament honors, including Ashley Hunter (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephen's & St. Agnes), Kelsi Bozel (Hunt Valley, Md./Notre Dame Prep) and Hannah Franklin (Phoenix, Md./McDonogh School). Franklin led the Hoyas in goals during the tournament with five in two games. Bozel totaled three goals and an assist while Hunter scored a goal and had four ground balls and a caused turnover.
Syracuse outshot GU 30 to 26 and had 25 ground balls compared to GU's 18. The Orange was whistled for 32 fouls and had three yellow cards compared to 16 fouls and two yellow cards on GU. The Hoyas were 2-of-7 on free position shots and had 17 turnovers. SU's Kayla Treanor led all scorers with six goals and an assist. As has been the case all season Georgetown's goal scoring was spread out as three players had two goals apiece. Franklin, Meghan Farrell (Bethesda, Md./Georgetown Visitation) and Dina Jackson (Potomac, Md./Bullis) each had two scores.
Georgetown held a two goal lead nine minutes into the game, the second time in as many games against `Cuse that GU built an early two goal advantage. Freshman Kristen Bandos (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Academy of Nortre Dame de Namur) won the opening draw and Jackson converted for GU's initial score. Syracuse hit the pipe on their ensuing offensive possession, which Franklin corralled. Franklin was awarded a free position shot at the 21:39 mark and nailed it for the two goal lead.
For the first 13 minutes GU's defense held the Orange scoreless, Hoya keeper Barb Black (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) had four saves in that span, on her way to a season high 11. SU broke the scoring drought after one of Black's saves bounced right to Devon Collins and she put it in the net. `Cuse scored again one minute later to knot the game at two.
The Hoyas regained the lead with 13:25 to play, the last lead GU would hold, after defender Casey McGowan (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) drew a charge. On the change of possession fellow defender Hunter worked her way up the field and struck from the left side for her career first goal. Syracuse responded one minute later to tie the affair and then struck three more times and held a 6-3 halftime lead. Two of the scores came from the tournament's most outstanding player, Treanor, after GU's defense held her scoreless for 27 minutes.
Syracuse opened the second half with another Treanor goal. Franklin broke Georgetown's 20-minute scoring drought with her second free position goal. Four straight by Syracuse gave the Orange an 11-4 lead with 18:29 remaining. Jackson hit her second of the day from the right side after receiving a Bozel pass before Syracuse scored three more unanswered.
Trailing 14-5 Georgetown's Farrell scored twice for her 21st and 22nd goals of the year. Both scores came after Georgetown caused turnovers, the first caused by Farrell and the second caused by Erin Lovett (Wantagh, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial).
Georgetown now waits to see if it gets an at-large berth to the 2013 NCAA Championship. The NCAA Tournament selection show will be shown live on www.ncaa.com on Sunday, May 5, at 9 p.m.
