Hoyas Fall to Orange, 15-8 in NCAA Tournament First Round
May 15, 2010
WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's lacrosse team (13-6) was unable to defeat the Syracuse Orange (14-6) for the third time this year, as the Orange used a six-goal run in the second half to defeat the Hoyas, 15-8 in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament at Multi-Sport Facility on Saturday afternoon. Georgetown, who had defeated Syracuse twice in the past two weeks, including the BIG EAST Championship game, were unable to add a third victory, as the Orange's goalkeeper Liz Hogan made 13 saves in the victory. Senior attack Molly Ford (Reisterstown, Md./Notre Dame Prep) closed out her career on the Hilltop, leading the Blue and Gray with four goals, including three in the second half. Senior midfielder Ashby Kaestner (Trappe, Md./Saints Peter and Paul) scored one goal and had one assist in the loss. Syracuse struck first, just 45 seconds into the first half as Christina Dove scored the first of her four goals to give the Orange a lead within the first minute of the game. The Hoyas' Kelly Barnes (St. David's, Pa./Radnor) answered at the 21 minute mark, scoring on a free position to tie the score. The Orange would take control from that point on, using a 5-1 run to end the first half. Ford would score the only other Georgetown goal in the first half, unassisted, but Jackie DePetris and Dove each scored within the last two-minutes to give Syracuse a 6-2 lead at halftime. Mary Beth Brophy (Berwyn, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) opened the second half scoring an unassisted goal for the Hoyas to close the gap to three goals, but the Orange would not let GU get any closer. The Hoyas were held scoreless over the next ten minutes as Syracuse scored six goals, including three from Tegan Brown, to take a commanding 12-3 lead. Ford would end SU's 6-0 run at the 17:32 mark in the second half. She scored another less than two minutes later, but it was too little too late to jumpstart Georgetown. Senior goalkeeper Caitlin Formby (Towson, Md./Notre Dame Prep) made five saves for Georgetown in the loss. The Hoyas end its season at 13-6 after winning the BIG EAST regular season and tournament championships in the same season for the first time in program history.
