WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's lacrosse squad (2-1) will kick off a six-game homestand on Wednesday as the team hosts the No. 19/20 Johns Hopkins University Blue Jays at Cooper Field. The opening draw is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. On Tuesday, junior goalkeeper Haelle Chomo (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier) was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll after helping the Hoyas to a 1-0 week.
Chomo earned the win in the cage at Drexel on Saturday with nine saves and five ground balls as the Hoyas scored a 16-8 victory. This is her first career BIG EAST Honor and Georgetown’s second of the season.
Sophomore attacker Michaela Bruno (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) led the way on offense on Saturday with three goals and three assists for six points in the contest. She was followed by junior attacker Morgan Ryan (Maplewood, N.J./Oak Knoll School) who posted three goals and an assist. Sophomore midfielder Natalia Lynch (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) also managed the hat trick as well as a squad best six draw controls on the afternoon. Eight different players scored a goal in the game for the Blue & Gray.
The Hoyas outshot the Dragons, 27-20, and pulled in 16 draw controls to Drexel’s nine. The Blue & Gray forced 15 Dragon turnovers, but committed 14 in the contest.
Bruno leads the team in scoring with 14 points on a squad-high nine goals and five assists for the season. She is followed by sophomore attacker Emily Ehle (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) who has four goals and a team-best nine assists for 13 points on the year. Rounding out the top three is junior attacker Taylor Gebhardt (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) who has tallied a team-high nine goals with one assist for 10 points.
Junior midfielder Francesca Whitehurst (Baltimore, Md./Roland Park Country School) boasts 22 draw controls to go along with her five goals, and freshman defender Mollie Miller (Alexandria, Va./Saint Stephens & Saint Agnes) has managed three caused turnovers on the year. In the cage, Chomo is 2-1 with 20 saves to her credit.
On Saturday, Penn scored a pair of goals in the final 2:19 to defeat Johns Hopkins, 12-11. Nicole DeMase and senior Emily Kenul scored back-to-back goals in a 75-second span to stake Hopkins to an 11-10 lead with 4:05 to play. The Blue Jays won the ensuing draw, but a turnover gave the ball back to the Quakers. JHU is 3-1 on the season with victories over Marquette, Drexel and Loyola Maryland.
The Hoyas are 9-11 all-time against the Blue Jays and 3-6 at home. Last year, the Hoyas fell in Baltimore, 11-10, in an overtime thriller. Gebhardt led the way for the Hoyas with a hat trick going 2-of-2 on free position shots. Whitehurst added two goals and two assists as well as three draw controls, while Ehle rounded out the top three with two goals and an assist. The previous season, Hopkins came away with the 10-4 victory in the District.
