WASHINGTON - Georgetown University women's lacrosse player Francesca Whitehurst (Baltimore, Md./Roland Park Country School) was named the BIG EAST Midfielder of the Week on Tuesday when the league announced its weekly awards. Additionally, the Hoyas (4-1) moved into the national rankings sitting at No. 25 in the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) poll and receiving votes in the Cascade Women’s Division I Media poll.
Whitehurst tallied five points with four goals and one assist in a 2-0 week for the Blue & Gray. She also managed nine draw controls and two ground balls. Georgetown defeated then-No. 19/20 Johns Hopkins, 15-14, and the junior managed three goals and one assist as well as six draw controls. In a 12-8 victory over Delaware on Saturday, Whitehurst managed a goal, three draw controls and a caused turnover.
This is Whitehurst’s first Midfielder of the Week award of the season and the fourth of her career. It is the first player of the week for the Hoyas this season after two nods to the honor roll.
Georgetown is back in the national rankings for the first time since the 2015 season. The team is also ranked No. 17 in Lacrosse Magazine.
