WASHINGTON - Georgetown University women's lacrosse player Mollie Miller (Alexandria, Va./Saint Stephens & Saint Agnes) was named the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week on Tuesday when the league announced its weekly awards. Additionally, sophomore Michaela Bruno (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll.
This week, the Hoyas (8-4, 4-1 BIG EAST) moved back into the national rankings, sitting at No. 23 in the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) poll and receiving votes in the Cascade Women’s Division I Media poll. GU was No. 15 in the first RPI of the season announced on Tuesday.
Miller anchored the Georgetown defense which led the Hoyas to a 2-0 week. In Wednesday’s pivotal 8-7 win over then-No. 22 Denver, Miller was tasked with keeping Kendra Lanuza in check. Lanuza entered the contest with 24 points over 10 games, and was limited to one goal off three shots, while committing three turnovers. Miller added two ground balls in each win last week, while also dishing an assist against Butler on Saturday.
This is the first freshman of the week award for the team this season and the second weekly award for the Blue & Gray in 2018 as well as the first of Miller’s career.
Bruno sparked the Georgetown offense last week with eight points off seven goals and an assist. Against Denver, the attacker scored the game winner in the 8-7 victory towards a total of three goals and an assist, before scoring four goals in Saturday’s 20-13 win over Butler.
This is the first honor of Bruno’s career and the fifth nod to the honor roll for the Hoyas this season.
The Hoyas will be back in action on Saturday as the squad travels to Vanderbilt University for a 2 p.m. ET BIG EAST matchup with the Commodores. Live stats and a webcast will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
