WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women’s lacrosse team (8-7, 6-1 BIG EAST) will return home on Saturday to host the No. 13/13 University of Denver Pioneers (12-2, 6-1 BIG EAST) in a BIG EAST Conference matchup set for 1 p.m. at Cooper Field. It is Georgetown’s final home regular season contest of the year and senior day.
On Tuesday, sophomore midfielder Francesca Whitehurst (Baltimore, Md./Roland Park Country School) was named the BIG EAST Midfielder of the Week for the second-consecutive week. Georgetown went 2-0 and solidified a BIG EAST Championship berth in the days prior.
Whitehurst repeated as the league’s top midfielder after stuffing the stat sheet in a pivotal week for the Hoyas. The sophomore totaled seven points off six goals and an assist, seven draw controls, five ground balls and two caused turnovers. She notched a hat trick in the 19-7 win over Cincinnati and also had three goals in the 19-11 victory at Marquette.
Whitehurst leads the team in scoring with 42 points on 27 goals and a squad-high 15 assists as well as a team-leading 57 draw controls. Sophomore attacker Taylor Gebhardt (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) is second with a team-high 33 goals and eight assists for 41 points. Sophomore attacker Morgan Ryan (Maplewood, N.J./Oak Knoll School) has tallied 28 goals and 11 assists for 39 points to round out the top three. There are 10 Hoyas currently registering double figures in points.
On defense, senior goalkeeper Maddy Fisher (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) has 92 saves to her credit, playing a majority of the minutes in goal. Senior defender Jenny Schwalje (Setauket, N.Y./St. Anthony’s) has forced a team-best 19 caused turnovers.
Denver capped off another 2-0 week and extended its win streak to five games with a 17-10 decision over Villanova on Saturday. With the win, DU claimed a spot in the BIG EAST Championship along with the Hoyas. The Pioneers had senior Emily Conway and sophomore Elizabeth Behrins pave the way as the duo combined for 11 goals. Denver owns a 12-2 record through 14 games which is the second-best mark in school history, tying the 2006, 2007 and 2012 campaigns.
The Hoyas are 2-0 all-time against Pioneers and 1-0 at home. The last meeting was a 12-8 Georgetown victory at home during the 2009 season.
The opening draw is scheduled for 1 p.m., and there will be a ceremony honoring the Class of 2017 prior to the starting lineups. The game will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network (BEDN) with Monika Moore calling the action and live stats will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
