WASHINGTON - Two sophomores on the Georgetown University women’s lacrosse team earned BIG EAST honors on Tuesday. Midfielder Francesca Whitehurst (Baltimore, Md./Roland Park Country School) was named the BIG EAST Midfielder of the Week for the third-consecutive week. Additionally, attacker Morgan Ryan (Maplewood, N.J./Oak Knoll School) received the BIG EAST Attacker of the Week award.
In the Hoyas’ biggest win of the season, Whitehurst stuffed the stat sheet with five points off a goal and four assists, seven draw controls, a caused turnover and ground ball. Georgetown topped No. 13/13 Denver, 9-7, with one of Whitehurst’s four dishes coming on the game-winning goal with 11:51 remaining.
This is Whitehurst’s third-consecutive BIG EAST weekly award, and the third of her career. She has earned two nods to the honor roll this season as well.
Ryan garnered her first weekly award after leading the Hoyas in the Denver win. The sophomore attacker totaled five points off four goals and an assist, adding a caused turnover and ground ball. Ryan scored Georgetown’s final two goals, including the game winner, as the Hoyas remained in contention for a BIG EAST regular season title and the No. 1 seed in the conference championship.
This is her first career weekly honor. Georgetown has had five so far this season.
The Hoyas will close out the regular season on Saturday as the squad travels to Gainesville, Fla., to battle the No. 2/2 University of Florida Gators at 1 p.m. Live stats and a webstream will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
