WASHINGTON - The fourth-seeded Georgetown University women's lacrosse squad (9-7, 5-3 BIG EAST) will open BIG EAST Tournament play on Thursday evening at the Carrier Dome against No. 1 seed Syracuse University Orange in BIG EAST Tournament semifinal matchup at approximately 8:15 p.m. The game will be televised live on CBS Sports Network with Todd Harris and GU alum Sheehan Stanwick Burch calling the action.
On Monday, junior defender Ashley Hunter (Fort Washington, Md./St. Stephen's & St. Agnes) and freshman attacker Caroline Tarzian (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) were both named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll.
Hunter managed four caused turnovers as well as an assist in a 1-1 week when the Blue & Gray fell to the No. 5/5 University of Maryland, 19-10, but defeated Rutgers University, 9-7. In the victory over Rutgers, she had a key assist which secured a BIG EAST Championship berth for the Hoyas.
Tarzian tallied six points, including five goals and one assist. In the win over Rutgers, she led the team with five points on four goals and one assist. She is currently ranked second overall in scoring with 32 goals and nine assists for 41 points on the season.
Junior midfielder Sophia Thomas (Lutherville, Md./Maryvale Prep) and Tarzian are currently leading the team in scoring with 46 and 41 points, respectively. Junior midfielder Kelsi Bozel (Hunt Valley, Md./Notre Dame Prep) and junior attacker Dina Jackson (Potomac, Md./Bullis) are third and fourth with 35 and 32 points on the year.
Senior defender Kelly Barnes (St. David's, Pa./Radnor) has 43 ground balls and freshman defender Megan Marinelli (Northport, N.Y./Northport) leads the squad with 26 caused turnovers. Bozel has notched 37 draw controls. Sophomore goalkeeper Barb Black (Ruxton, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls) has tallied a squad-best 94 saves.
The Orange used an 18-3 victory over Villanova on Saturday to win the BIG EAST Regular season crown. Syracuse extended its winning streak to 14 games and finished the regular season with a 15-2 record. Junior Michelle Tumolo led a balanced scoring attack for the Orange. She tied her career highs with eight points and five assists. Sophomore Alyssa Murray scored a team-high four goals and finished with five points, while Sarah Holden recorded two goals and an assist. Freshmen Kailah Kempney and Devon Collins added two goals apiece as 10 different players found the back of the net for SU.
Murray is leading the team in scoring with 87 points on 59 goals and 28 assists this season. Tumolo has added 40 goals and a squad-best 39 assists for 79 points.
Georgetown leads the all-time series against the Orange, 14-5, and the team is 5-2 on the road but 0-1 in BIG EAST Tournament matchups. Earlier this season, the Hoyas fell to Syracuse, 22-11, at the Carrier Dome in regular season play. In the lone meeting in the BIG EAST Tournament, Georgetown lost, 15-8. The Blue & Gray is 2-3 all-time against Syracuse in postseason play.
The opening draw is scheduled for approximately 8:15 p.m., at the Carrier Dome. It will follow the first semifinal featuring No. 2 Loyola (Md.) and No. 3 Notre Dame.
