The Georgetown University women's lacrosse program and junior goalie Barb Black will play either Penn or UVa in the Second Round of the NCAA Championship.
May 5, 2013
WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's lacrosse team (13-5) was tabbed as the sixth seed in the 2013 NCAA Women's Lacrosse Championship as announced earlier tonight on ncaa.com. The Hoyas earned one of 13 at-large berths and with the sixth seed earn a first round bye. The Hoyas will face the winner of University of Pennsylvania and University of Virginia, a game that will be played at Georgetown's Multi-Sport Field on Friday, May 10, at 3 p.m.
"It is exciting to be back in the NCAA Tournament," commented Head Coach Ricky Fried. "We worked hard this season and it is nice to be rewarded with a high seed."
This marks Georgetown's 13th trip to the NCAA Tournament and the seventh time in the past 10 seasons. Georgetown is 13-12 all-time in the NCAA Tournament. The furthest the Hoyas have advanced is to the championship game in both 2001 and 2002. GU was last in the tournament in 2010 when the Hoyas lost in the first round to Syracuse, 15-8, at home.
Four other BIG EAST teams earned a berth in the 2013 NCAA Tournament as Syracuse, Loyola (Md.) and Notre Dame all join Georgetown in the competition. Five teams from one conference sets a new NCAA selection record, which was previously three on numerous occasions, most recently in 2012.
This is the first season that the women's tournament involves 26 teams and the Hoyas have built a 6-5 record this year against teams in the tournament. GU has wins over Towson, Stanford, Princeton, Loyola (Md.) and Connecticut. The losses came at the hands of Duke, Syracuse, North Carolina and Notre Dame.
Georgetown has faced Penn only once in its history, recording an 11-9 win in Philadelphia on March 21, 2012. Georgetown's history with Virginia is deeper, dating back to 1995. The Cavaliers own a 7-3 advantage in the series but GU has won three of the last four meetings. The last meeting took place in 2008 when the Hoyas defeated the Cavs 8-7 in Washington. The two programs have met twice in the NCAAs with UVa winning both, a first round game in 2003, 16-9, and then in the 2004 semifinals, 12-9.
The game pitting Georgetown versus the winner of Penn and UVa on Sunday, May 12, will start at 1 p.m. on GU's Multi-Sport Field.
