Georgetown Lands Four on IWLCA All-South Region Teams

WASHINGTON - Four Georgetown University women's lacrosse student-athletes received All-South Region honors as announced earlier today by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association. Sophomore Caroline Tarzian (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) was an All-South Region First Team selection while seniors Ashley Hunter (Alexandria, Va./St. Stephen's & St. Agnes) and Sophia Thomas (Lutherville, Md./Maryvale Prep) along with junior Kelyn Freedman (Newtown Square, Pa./Radnor) were All-South Region Second Team members. The IWLCA honored 128 student-athletes with all region awards and those players are eligible for inclusion on the IWLCA All-American teams, which will be announced on May 17.
Tarzian was a recent selection to the All-BIG EAST First Team and leads the Hoyas in goals and points with 34 and 47, respectively. She is one of 25 nominees for the 2013 Tewaaraton Trophy and was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll three times this season. Tarzian started all 18 games on attack and totaled 10 multi-goal games and four multi-assist games. She tallied five goals in a game three times. This is Tarzian's career first selection to an IWLCA All-Region team.
Freedman is second on the team in goals with 29, third in points with 39 and she leads the Hoyas in multi-goal games with 11. She was an All-BIG EAST First Team selection and a BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll selection twice. Freedman scored a point in 17 of 18 games and is second on the squad in draw controls with 44, which ranks 11th in Hoya single season history. This is Freedman's career first selection to an IWLCA All-Region team as well.
Hunter was named to the All-BIG EAST First Team and also was an All-BIG EAST Tournament selection. She started all 18 games on defense and totaled a team high 18 caused turnovers to go with 25 ground balls. Hunter made the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll once and netted her career first goal this past Saturday against Syracuse. She was a Second Team All-South Region selection in 2012.
Thomas has been an All-Region selection for three straight seasons, earning Second Team All-America honors last year. She was an All-BIG EAST Second Team selection this season after earning a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll once. Thomas has 22 goals and five assists and ranks sixth on the team in points with 27. She is tied for 12th on the Hoya all-time goal scoring list with 115 in her career and is 16th in points with 138.
Georgetown received an at-large bid to the 2013 NCAA Championship and was selected as the sixth seed. The Hoyas will host a First Round game between Virginia and Pennsylvania on Friday, May 10, at 3 p.m. and then face the winner of that contest on Sunday, May 12, at 1 p.m. Both games will be played at Multi-Sport Field in the middle of Georgetown's campus.
