WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's lacrosse squad will open NCAA Tournament play against Johns Hopkins University (15-4) on Friday evening at the University of North Carolina. The game is scheduled for 5 p.m., at Fetzer Field.
This marks Georgetown's 14th trip to the NCAA Tournament and the eighth time in the past 11 seasons. Georgetown is 13-13 all-time in the NCAA Tournament. The furthest the Hoyas have advanced is to the championship game in both 2001 and 2002. GU was last in the tournament a season ago when the Hoyas lost in the second round to Virginia, 10-8, at home.
This is the second season that the women's tournament involves 26 teams and the Hoyas have built a 2-8 record this year against teams in the tournament, with two of those contests going into overtime and six of the matchups decided by one goal. GU has wins over Duke and Princeton this year.
The Hoyas finished the season with a record of 10-8 and a mark of 6-1 in the BIG EAST. GU advanced to the conference tournament final, but fell to Louisville, 9-8.
Georgetown is 8-8 all-time against Johns Hopkins and has won seven of the last nine meetings. The squads have never played in the NCAA Tournament.
The teams met earlier this year and JHU came away with the 11-10 overtime win at Multi-Sport Field. The Hoyas led by one through 20 minutes of play until the Blue Jays scored with 41 seconds remaining. The team then found the answer in overtime to get the victory. Hopkins scored five of the last six goals of the game.
Johns Hopkins returns to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2007. The Blue Jays are coming off a loss to eventual champion Florida in the ALC Semifinals one week ago. Hopkins is one of five teams from the ALC that earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament.
The opening draw is scheduled 5 p.m. Live stats www.GUHoyas.com. Tickets will be available through UNC's athletic ticket office.
The winner will advance to play the third-seeded Tar Heels on Sunday at 1 p.m.
