July 8, 2014

WASHINGTON - Three Georgetown University student-athletes have been named winners of the 2013-14 BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence award for their respective sports. The announcement was made by the BIG EAST Conference on Tuesday, July 8.

Andrew Springer (Westerly, R.I./Westerly) earned the award for men's cross country, Maggie Brown (Woodside, Calif./Menlo School) was honored from women's lacrosse and Amanda Kimbers (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh) was recognized for women's outdoor track & field.

Springer ended his Georgetown career with three All-America performances, including back-to-back appearances in the men's 10,000-meter finals, earning second team honors in 2013 and 2014. Springer's third honor came from the 2013 season when he doubled up in both the men's 10,000m and the 5,000m. He finished as a four-time BIG EAST champion with three individual titles and one relay title.

Brown was named Second Team All-BIG EAST as a senior, marking her first conference accolade. The defender started all 20 games for the Blue & Gray this season picking up 20 ground balls as well as 12 caused turnovers and 13 draw controls along the way. The Hoyas were 11-9 overall and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Kimbers ended her career at Georgetown as a two-time All-American, on one indoor relay and one outdoor relay. She was a six-time BIG EAST champion with three relay and three individual titles, with all three individual titles occurred in her final year of eligibility. Kimbers was the first Georgetown student-athlete to be named the Most Outstanding Track Performer since the award became a separate award from the Most Outstanding Field Performer in 1993.

The Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Awards are given to one student-athlete in each BIG EAST-sponsored sport based on academic credentials, athletic accolades or performances and volunteer service to the community. Student-athletes who have attained junior academic standing and a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 are eligible. The winners are chosen by the BIG EAST Faculty Athletics Representative Council.

The last time a Georgetown student-athlete won the award was Renee Tomlin in 2010-11.
