WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's lacrosse squad has announced its captains for the upcoming season. Seniors Barb Black (Ruxton, Md./St. Paul's School for Girls), MJ Coyle (Kensington, Md./Holy Child), Hannah Franklin (Phoenix, Md./McDonogh School) and Kelyn Freedman (Newtown Square, Pa./Radnor) were selected by their peers to lead the squad during the 2014 season.
"Our four captains bring a lot of playing experience and they will all contribute as leaders in different ways," said Georgetown Head Coach Ricky Fried. "They have the respect of their teammates and will lead by example."
Black has been a stalwart in the cage for the past three seasons. Last year, she started all 19 games with 96 saves to her credit as well as 22 ground balls. She is among the career leaders in saves with 257 ranking her eighth all time. She has had two-career nods to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll.
Coyle started all 19 games last season for Georgetown and managed 21 ground balls as well as seven draw controls. The defender also had five caused turnovers. At the annual banquet, Coyle was awarded the Kim Simons Coaches' Award for the player that best demonstrates the qualities of coachability, positive attitude and leadership. She is the only returning captain from last season.
Franklin played in all 19 games with 10 starts last season. The midfielder had 25 goals with four assists for 29 points to tie for fifth on the squad. She also tied for the lead with eight free position goals and picked up 19 ground balls along with 14 draw controls and 10 caused turnovers. After five goals in two games, she earned a spot on the BIG EAST All-Tournament Team last season.
Freedman was named First Team All-BIG EAST and Second Team All-South Region for the first time in her career a season ago. The midfielder was also selected to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll twice last year. She was second on the team in goals with 31 and third in points with 41. Freedman was second on the team in draw controls with 46, which ranks as the 10th best total in GU history, and had a team-high eight free position goals.
The Hoyas lost nine players from last year's squad that returned the Blue & Gray to the NCAA Championship. Georgetown earned the sixth seed and a first round bye in the 2013 NCAA Championship. GU compiled a 13-6 overall record and a 6-2 mark in BIG EAST play. Georgetown returns four of its top five scorers along with three of four starting defenders in 2014.
The Blue & Gray will begin preseason in January, 2014.
