Dec. 5, 2013
WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's lacrosse squad released its 2014 schedule on Thursday. The team will face seven squads that finished 2013 ranked in the top 20 nationally as well as eight NCAA Tournament qualifiers. The Hoyas will have a good mix of strong opponents as well as some new conference foes as the coaching staff has once again put together a challenging slate.
Georgetown will start off 2014 by hosting the University of Delaware Blue Hens at Multi-Sport Field on Feb. 15. A season ago, Georgetown downed the Blue Hens in the season opener on the road by a score of 16-12. It will mark the third-consecutive season the Hoyas begin the year with Delaware.
The Blue & Gray will have its toughest stretch of the schedule facing five NCAA Tournament teams and four ranked teams over the next five games with four on the road.
Georgetown will play at Towson University on Feb. 22, facing an NCAA-Tournament qualifier. This will be the beginning of a tough three-game road trip including stops at Princeton (Mar. 1), which finished the season at No. 18 and in the NCAA Tournament, as well as Duke which was No. 7 in the final poll and an NCAA Tournament quarterfinalist.
The Hoyas will host Stanford on Mar. 9 after a No. 14 finish in the polls with an NCAA Tournament appearance. The tough stretch will conclude with the 2013 NCAA Champions from North Carolina on Mar. 15 in Chapel Hill, N.C.
GU will return home on Mar. 21 to host Johns Hopkins which begins a stretch of three-consecutive home games. The Blue & Gray will host Loyola (Md.) on Mar. 25, the Greyhounds were No. 10 in the final poll and went to the NCAA Tournament. To round out the homestand, Georgetown will open BIG EAST Conference playing host to Louisville on Mar. 29.
The Hoyas finish non-conference play with Penn on Apr. 1 playing at a neutral site in Owings Mills, Md. The Quakers were No. 17 in the polls and went to the NCAA Tournament a season ago.
BIG EAST Conference matchups will end the season as the Blue & Gray hosts Marquette on Apr. 4. A trip to No. 20 Connecticut, a 2013 NCAA qualifier, is scheduled for Apr. 11 followed by a game at Rutgers on Apr. 13.
Georgetown will finish up the home schedule with matchups against Villanova (Apr. 17) and Temple (Apr. 19). The season finale is scheduled at Cincinnati on Apr. 26.
The BIG EAST Tournament semifinals will be held on May 1 and the championship will be on May 3 at Multi-Sport Field.
The Hoyas lost nine players from last year's squad that returned the Blue & Gray to the NCAA Championship. Georgetown earned the sixth seed and a first round bye in the 2013 NCAA Championship. GU compiled a 13-6 overall record and a 6-2 mark in BIG EAST play. Georgetown returns four of its top five scorers along with three of four starting defenders in 2014.
