Women's Rowing Wins Lightweight 4+ at HOCR

Oct. 24, 2017

WASHINGTON - Georgetown University's women's rowing team won the lightweight fours event at the 53rd Head of the Charles Regatta on Sunday afternoon in Boston, Mass. The Hoyas dominated the competition, posting a time of 17:56.443 to finish more than 27 seconds faster than their nearest competitor and just two seconds off the course record. Sunday's win was the first in program history for the Blue & Gray at the Charles.

"We knew that this was going to be a good boat, but with only a few days of preparation in the lineup we were really pleased with the outcome," said Head Coach Stephen Full. "The girls rowed an aggressive race form the start, staying around 32spm for the entire length of the course. Seeing them come through Eliot on full tilt and look strong entering the final 1k was great. Rhythm was good, blade work was good. I think Michaela did a great job with the congestion at that part as well. There were two boats she was trying to pass and made a really aggressive line for the apex of the turn."

Competing for the Hoyas were Michaela McCool (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) at coxswain along with Elisabeth O'Brien (Darien, Conn./Darien), Caroline O'Brien (Darien, Conn./Darien), Megan Walsh (Southborough, Mass./Algonquin Regional) and Lindsay Olita (Vineland, N.J./Vineland).

The Hoyas topped Stanford by more than 27 seconds for the largest margin of victory in any of the collegiate events, men's or women's, in the regatta. An international crew from Germany finished third, followed by Princeton, Boston University, Harvard Radcliffe, MIT, Boston University `B', California, MIT `B' and Penn State.

"This race was an opportunity for the G130s to set the tone for the year," Olita said. "We executed our plan of going out hard and fast in the beginning and worked together cohesively to maintain that aggression for the remainder of the race. This was a solid weekend for Georgetown lightweight rowing, and we are hungry for more results like this."

Georgetown returns to action on Sunday, October 29, at the Princeton Chase.
