Georgetown Contests Class of 2004 Cup, Falls to Harvard
April 9, 2013
WASHINGTON - The Hoya Lightweights hosted the Harvard-Radcliffe Lightweights this past Saturday to contest the Class of 2004 Cup on the Potomac River with favorable conditions for racing - warm, good water, and a slight tailwind. The Hoyas fell to the Crimson in both the Varsity Eight and Varsity Four.
Harvard's Varsity Eight was quick off the line, but the Hoyas are focused on responding differently as the pressure comes early in the race.
"This spring, we've started training our entire squad together, which is giving us better racing experience at practice and challenging everyone to take the next step," Head Coach Miranda Paris said. "Building something strong takes time and patience."
Assistant coach Steve Full, who coaches the fours, has been impressed with the team's progress and hopes to see better results as the season grows.
"The girls are very intense and they like to race," Full said. "Right now our goal is to remain calm while keeping the pedal down when another crew moves on us. When Harvard moved on us, we got flustered and were not able to respond as a unit. This group had made a lot of improvements to their stroke, but we can be better at our execution of the race plan in the first 750-1000m."
"This was our first race against a lightweight crew this spring," assistant lightweight coach Alex Kuschner said. "We're looking forward to gaining more speed."
"While the result was disappointing," senior captain Kayla McNiell said, "this race taught us a lot and I'm excited for us to find more speed in the coming weeks."
The Hoya Lightweights face Bucknell next in the Class of 2012 Cup on Lake Picket in Ridgefield Park, NJ. Follow them on Twitter @HoyaRowing.
