GU Women's Soccer Ties Sixth-Ranked Virginia, 2-2, in Final Exhibition Game
Aug. 18, 2008
Washington, D.C. - A second preseason contest on the road against ACC competition, another high-scoring tie for the Georgetown women's soccer team. After last week's 3-3 tie at the University of Maryland, the Hoyas drew 2-2 in Charlottesville, VA. on Monday evening against the sixth-ranked Cavaliers.
UVA took a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute as Maggie Kistner scored off of a cross by Sinead Farrelly. However, the lead was short-lived as freshman Samantha Baker (Long Beach, Calif./Wilson) pulled the Hoyas even in the 33rd minute as she scored on a breakaway set up by a through-ball by classmate Camille Trujillo (Albuquerque, N.M./St. Pius X).
Georgetown went ahead 2-1 in the 70th minute as Baker's long throw found senior Nicole Smith (Washingtonville, N.Y./Washingtonville) inside the penalty area, where she tapped the ball in. The Cavaliers answered less than a minute later when Amanda Stewart's cross was played by Meghan Lenczyk directly to Kelly Quinn, who one-timed a shot from 20 yards out inside the far post.
For the game, the Cavaliers out-shot the Blue and Gray, 22-3, and had a 7-1 corner-kick advantage. Sophomore Jackie DesJardin ( Sunnyvale, Calif./Archbishop Mitty) made seven saves and freshman Elizabeth Hanna (Waxhaw, N.C./Weddington) denied one as the ladies split time in goal for GU.
The Hoyas open the regular season this Saturday, August 23, at American University. The game will kick-off at 1 p.m.
