Georgetown beat Delaware, 3-0, on Sunday afternoon.

WASHINGTON - No. 13 Georgetown scored once in the first half and used an impressive second half to score two more times en route to a 3-0 win over Delaware in a women's college soccer game at Shaw Field on Sunday afternoon. Senior defender Mary Kroening (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury) scored a goal and had an assist to lead the Hoyas.
It was the sixth-straight win to open the season for the Hoyas, who are now 6-0-0 overall. Georgetown, ranked No. 13 by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and No. 14 by Soccer America, has won six-straight games to open the season for the third time in the last four years.
"They're a feisty team (Delaware) and they've always been like that," Head Coach Dave Nolan said. "If you're not at the top of your game, they'll punish you. I thought in the first half, in particular, we were quite sloppy and the game was closer than it needed to be. In the second half, we got that early goal and I think that took the sting out of the game."
Delaware came out aggressively and had a shot in the opening five minutes of the game from the top of the circle by Dianna Marinaro that went high.
The Hoyas took the lead near the mid-point of the first half when Kroening played a ball from near midfield to the near sideline to senior Colleen Dinn (Kensington, Md./Holy Cross). Dinn sent a cross that slid through the box and to the feet of senior forward Kaitlin Brenn (Branchburg, N.J./Somerville). Delaware goalkeeper Jess Figueroa came off her line and tried to steer the ball away, but Brenn collected the ball and ripped it from seven yards out, scoring at 18:49 for her fourth goal of the season.
Georgetown wasted no time in the second half, attacking the Blue Hens often. A shot from senior Kailey Blain (Merrimack, N.H./Merrimack) was saved by Figueroa in the opening minute, leading to a corner kick for the Blue & Gray.
Junior forward Audra Ayotte (Marlborough, Conn./RHAM) took the corner from the far sideline and her kick went to the far post, where Kroening headed it past Figueroa at 47:10, pushing the Hoyas lead to 2-0.
Georgetown continued to press in the second half and out-shot the Blue Hens, 8-3, during the final 45 minutes. Ayotte had a shot in the 55th minute blocked from the left wing, while a shot from junior forward Vanessa Skrumbis (Encino, Calif./Sierra Canyon) in the 66th minute went high.
The Blue Hens had chances in the second half, but the Georgetown back-line - anchored by senior Emily Menges (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) and Alexa St. Martin (Westford, Mass./Westford Academy) - limited chances. Junior goalkeeper Emma Newins (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run) was solid in the back, making three saves, including a pair in the second half to keep the game scoreless as the Hoyas recorded their third-straight shutout.
The Hoya lead grew to 3-0 late in the game when junior Jessica Clinton (Avon, Mass./Thayer Academy) blasted a shot from just inside the 18 that beat Figueroa to the upper left corner at 87:42. Clinton had taken a pass from Skrumbis on the near side of the box after a cross from just over midfield from junior Daphne Corboz (Green Brook, N.J./Watchung Hills), Georgetown's first team All-American and the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year, who was playing her first game of the season.
Georgetown out-shot Delaware, 11-6, including an 8-3 advantage in the second half, and had a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.
Georgetown is back home for a non-league matchup on Friday, Sept. 13, hosting Yale at Shaw Field. Kickoff is slated for 3 p.m. Live video of the game will be available on the Georgetown Athletics website - www.guhoyas.com - with Tom Kolker calling the action.
