WASHINGTON - The ninth-ranked Georgetown University women's soccer team scored a pair of goals in the second half and held off a late challenge from Providence en route to a 2-1 win over the Friars at Glay Field in Rhode Island Sunday afternoon, completing a BIG EAST Conference weekend sweep for the Hoyas.

It was the third-straight win for the Hoyas, who improve to 11-0-2 overall and 3-0-1 in the BIG EAST Conference. The win also extends a season-opening unbeaten streak for Georgetown, ranked No. 9 by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and No. 9 by Soccer America, to 13 games, the longest in program history.

The conditions made it very difficult and it was going to come down to who could handle it and who had enough quality chances," Head Coach Dave Nolan said. "Overall, we were better today and I think we had the better chances. Providence played really hard and their kids were up for the game and they had some light after they scored, but at the end of the day, I felt it was a just result. We had the better moments and probably played the better soccer."

After a first half in which the Hoyas out-shot Providence, 6-2, the Blue & Gray wasted little time in the second half. Senior midfielder Kailey Blain (Merrimack, N.H./Merrimack) finished a strike from the top of the 18-yard box and beat Friars goalkeeper Jessica Goudreault low to the corner at 45:31, giving the Hoyas the lead.

Georgetown pushed the lead to 2-0 in the 66th minute. Junior midfielder Daphne Corboz (Green Brook, N.J./Watchung Hills) finished a give-and-go in the box with sophomore Sarah Adams (San Diego, Calif./Westview) at 65:21 for her fifth goal of the season. Adams and Corboz played the ball back and forth twice, with Adams send a cross to Corboz for the final finish.

The Friars pulled to within 2-1 when Catherine Zimmerman was fouled in the box and awarded a penalty kick. She connected on the kick at 70:47, but that was as close as the Friars would get.

Junior goalkeeper Emma Newins (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run) made two saves for the Hoyas.

Georgetown will be off for a week before heading to play at Marquette on Sunday, Oct. 13. Kickoff in Milwaukee, Wis. is slated for 2 p.m.
