WASHINGTON - Highlighted by nine home dates, including four games against BIG EAST Conference opponents, and seven games against teams that played in the NCAA Tournament last year, Georgetown University Head Women's Soccer Coach Dave Nolan announced the team's 2014 schedule.
Georgetown closed out the 2013 season with a 16-3-2 record, tying the school single season record for wins in a season, set in 2012 when GU went 16-4-3. The Hoyas were selected to the play in the NCAA Tournament for the third time in four years and reached the second round. The team set a school record with 58 goals scored and was ranked among the top three in the country in scoring offense.
"The schedule for this fall is particularly competitive and designed to challenge us early in the year," Nolan said. "The non-conference segment is perhaps the toughest we will have ever faced and we get to measure ourselves against some strong competition from the ACC, Big 12, West Coast and Big West Conference. With a new look team, it will give us all the answers we need before we start BIG EAST play later on. Everybody here is excited by the opportunity."
The Hoyas will play a pair of exhibition games at home, first on Tuesday, Aug. 12 against George Mason. The team returns to play on Saturday, Aug. 16, hosting 2013 NCAA Tournament participant Penn State. Both games will be played at Shaw Field.
The regular season begins with a trip west as the Hoyas will play in the University of San Diego Tournament. The season starts against host San Diego on Friday, Aug. 22 (7 p.m.) and the weekend concludes with a match against Long Beach State on Sunday, Aug. 24 (1 p.m.).
The Hoyas play their home opener on Friday, Aug. 29, hosting Atlantic Coast Conference foe North Carolina State. Kickoff at Shaw Field is slated for 3 p.m. GU posted a 3-1 win over the Wolfpack on the road last season.
The Blue & Gray will hit the road for four-straight games following the home opener, starting with a date on Sunday, Aug. 31 against Towson University (1 p.m.). That is followed by an appearance in the Virginia Tech Tournament, facing host Virginia Tech in the opening round of the tournament on Friday, Sept. 5 (7 p.m.). The weekend closes with a matchup against Wake Forest on Sunday, Sept. 7 (1 p.m.).
The four-game road trip concludes on Friday, Sept. 12 with a visit to former conference foe West Virginia, now a member of the Big 12 Conference. That game will kick off at 7 p.m.
The team will host a pair of non-league games prior to the start of conference play, first against George Washington on Sunday, Sept. 14 (4 p.m.) and then on Sunday, Sept. 21 against Duquesne (1 p.m.).
BIG EAST Conference play starts on the road with games at DePaul on Thursday, Sept. 25 (3 pm.) and at Xavier on Sunday, Sept. 28 (1 p.m.).
The team plays three-straight conference games at home in early October. Butler visits Shaw Field on Thursday, Oct. 2 (3 p.m.) and the weekend concludes with a visit from Providence on Sunday, Oct. 5 (1 p.m.). The homestand closes with a matchup against league rival Marquette on Sunday, Oct. 12 (1 p.m.).
The final stretch of the season will be challenging, with three of the team's final four games away from home. Georgetown visits St. John's on Thursday, Oct. 16 (7 p.m.) and then plays at Creighton on Sunday, Oct. 19 (1 p.m.).
The final home game of the season will be on Sunday, Oct. 26 against Villanova (1 p.m.) and the regular season finale is slated for Friday, Oct. 31 (7 p.m.) at Seton Hall.
