WASHINGTON - Highlighted by 11 home dates, including five against conference opponents as the new BIG EAST Conference starts, Georgetown University Head Women's Soccer Coach Dave Nolan announced the team's 2013 schedule.
"The 2013 schedule has been a challenge due to the ever changing conference landscape, however, I am excited that we have managed to put together a strong, competitive schedule that meets our needs," Nolan said. "The standout games involve opening up with a regional power, William & Mary, while we also head to ACC country to take on NC State. We also have a tough weekend later in September hosting a very good UCF team before going on the road to play former BIG EAST partner and national power, UConn.
"After that we tackle the new Big East conference, taking on many familiar foes, with the highlight being a tough road re-match of last year's Big East Title battle against Marquette. This is the schedule we need to help us get back to the NCAA's this fall."
The Blue & Gray will play 11 home games, including five against conference opponents. The new format of the league has each team meeting once. GU will host newcomers Xavier (Sept, 29, 1 p.m.) and Creighton (Oct. 20, 1 p.m.), as well as DePaul (Sept. 26, 3 p.m.), St. John's (Oct. 17, 3 p.m.) and Seton Hall (Nov. 2, 1 p.m.).
Georgetown's BIG EAST road schedule includes a trip to Butler (Oct. 3, 7 p.m.), Providence (Oct. 6, 1 p.m.), Marquette (Oct. 13, 1 p.m.) and a game at Villanova (Oct. 27, 1 p.m.).
The team opens the season with a pair of exhibition games, both at home. The first match is against Richmond on Wednesday, Aug. 14 (5 p.m.), followed by a meeting with former league rival West Virginia (Saturday, Aug. 17, 4 p.m.).
The regular season opens on Friday, Aug. 23 (4 p.m.) against William & Mary, the first of nine non-conference games. The home weekend continues on Sunday, Aug. 25 with the Hoyas hosting Quinnipiac (1 p.m.).
The following weekend, the Hoyas take part in the D.C. Invitational, playing at George Washington on Friday, Aug. 30 (4 p.m.), before hosting Virginia Commonwealth on Sunday, Sept. 1 (1 p.m.).
A challenging game at ACC foe North Carolina State is up next on Wednesday, Sept. 4 (7 p.m.), followed by three non-league home games - against Delaware (Sept. 8, 4 p.m.), Yale (Sept. 13, 3 p.m.) and Central Florida (Sept. 19, 3 p.m.). The team's final test before conference play starts is a trip to UConn on Sunday, Sept. 22 (1 p.m.).
Georgetown returns all but two starters from last year's team, including junior midfielder Daphne Corboz (Green Brook, N.J./Watchung Hills), a first team All-American and the BIG EAST Offensive Player after scoring 18 goals and setting a school record with 44 points. The Hoyas enjoyed one of the most successful seasons in program history in 2012, setting a school record with 16 wins. The Blue & Gray finished with a 16-4-3 overall record and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Along the way, the team posted an 8-1-1 record in the BIG EAST Conference and won the BIG EAST National Division title.
