WASHINGTON - After two weeks of training during the preseason, the Georgetown University women's soccer team opens the 2012 regular season at home on Friday, Aug. 17, hosting local rival George Washington. Kickoff at recently-renovated North Kehoe Field is slated for 3 p.m.
Live video and game statistics of the match will be available on the Georgetown Athletics website - www.guhoyas.com.
This will be the 10th all-time meeting between the Hoyas and the Colonials. Georgetown has won the last five meetings between the teams, including a 3-0 decision at North Kehoe Field last season. Junior Kailey Blain (Merrimack, N.H./Merrimack) scored a pair of goals in the win.
The Hoyas played a pair of exhibition games, first hosting Richmond Thursday, Aug. 9 at 4 p.m., followed by a trip to Virginia this past weekend.
Georgetown is coming off a 2011 season that was its most successful regular season in program history, as the Blue & Gray finished with a 15-6-0 overall record. The 15 wins were the most in a regular season and tied for the most in a season overall with the 2010 squad. Georgetown finished in second place in the American Division of the BIG EAST Conference, earned a first round bye and advanced to the semifinals of the league tournament for the second time in program history.
The Hoyas were picked to finish in third in the BIG EAST National Division with 83 points. Notre Dame received 12 first place votes and 109 points and was picked first, while Louisville, with two first place votes and 98 points, was picked second.
The Blue & Gray should be led by sophomore midfielder Daphne Corboz (Greenbrook, N.J./Watchung Hills), who was selected to the All-BIG EAST Preseason Team last week. Corboz was one of only two sophomores selected to the All-BIG EAST Preseason Team. She was an All-BIG EAST Third Team selection and an All-BIG EAST Rookie selection last year as a freshman. A two-time BIG EAST Rookie of the Week selection last season, Corboz finished fourth on the team in scoring with 24 points (11 goals, one assist). She was second on the team in goals (11) and scored 11 points in conference games this season (five goals, one assist).
Following Friday's season opener, the Hoyas play at Delaware on Sunday, Aug. 19 at 1 p.m.
