Women's Soccer Plays at George Washington Friday, Hosts VCU on Sunday

No. 13 Georgetown plays at George Washington on Friday.

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's soccer team will be back in action again on Friday, Aug. 30, visiting cross-town rival George Washington in a non-league match as part of the D.C. Invitational. Kickoff at the GW Soccer Field on the Mount Vernon campus is slated for 4 p.m.

The Hoyas enter the weekend with a 2-0-0 record following season-opening wins over William & Mary (2-1,overtime) and Quinnipiac (5-0) last weekend. GW enters the weekend with a 1-0-0 record following a 1-0 win over American last weekend.

Georgetown is ranked No. 13 in the country in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll and No. 14 by Soccer America.

The Blue & Gray have an all-time record of 9-1-0 against the Colonials and have won the last six games in the series, including a 2-0 decision last year.

Senior women's soccer player Emily Menges (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) was named the BIG EAST Conference's Defensive Player of the Week on Monday after helping to lead the Hoyas to the wins last weekend. Menges, the BIG EAST's Preseason Defensive Player of the Year, led a back-line that allowed only four shots by its opponents over the weekend and recorded its 14th shutout in the last 24 games. When William & Mary scored in the season opener on Friday, it was the first goal allowed by Georgetown at home since Cornell scored in a 6-1 GU win on Sept. 1, 2012.

Senior forward Kaitlin Brenn (Branchburg, N.J./Somerville) was selected to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll. Brenn scored both of the team's goals, including the game-winner in overtime, against William & Mary. She also added an assist in the win over Quinnipiac. Brenn, an All-BIG EAST Second Team selection after scoring 30 points in 2012, was a Preseason All-BIG EAST selection this year. She has scored 15 goals and has 17 career assists for 47 points.

 

 

The Blue & Gray are back home on Sunday, Sept. 1, hosting Virginia Commonwealth. Kickoff at Shaw Field is slated for 1 p.m. Live video coverage of the game will be available on the Georgetown Athletics website, www.guhoyas.com, with Tom Kolker calling all of the action. This will be the first meeting between the schools.
