Georgetown Women’s Soccer Fall to William and Mary in Season Opener
Germantown, Md. – In their 2002 season opener the Georgetown women’s soccer team lost to the William and Mary Tribe 1-0 at the Maryland Soccerplex.
The Hoyas kept the Tribe scoreless through the first half thanks to solid play from freshman goaltender Louisa Butler (Boston, Ma. / Philips Academy) who made three difficult saves before the first 45 minutes elapsed. In the second half the teams traded opportunities until William and Mary capitalized on a play in the box to put the Tribe up 1-0. The Hoyas pressed for a score until the 30 minute mark when Butler collided with an attacking Tribe player in the goal box on an aggressive challenge. Butler, who had played so well in her first collegiate start, was forced from the game with injury, replaced by back-up goaltender Casey McCann (Mendham, N.J. / Mendham). Adopting a defensive style of play for the remainder, William and Mary ran out the clock to hand the Hoyas their first loss of the season.
Georgetown plays their first game at home on North Kehoe Field on Wednesday, September 4th against Howard at 5 p.m.
