Sept. 3, 2010
WASHINGTON - The No. 22-ranked Georgetown University women's soccer team returns home for a pair of games on Labor Day Weekend, starting with a matchup against local rival George Mason on Saturday, Sept. 4 at North Kehoe Field. The game against the Patriots kicks off the D.C. Invitational at noon. The second game of the day, kicking off at approximately 2:30 p.m., features American against Fairfield. The Hoya game will air live on the Georgetown Athletics website - www.guhoyas.com - with live statistics from the game available as well. The Hoyas have opened the season with a 4-0 record and are ranked No. 22 in the country in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Top 25 poll. GU is ranked No. 2 in the NSCAA Northeast Regional poll. The meeting with George Mason will be the fourth all-time between the schools. The Patriots have won all three previous meetings, including a 2-0 win over the Hoyas during the 2006 season. Georgetown opened BIG EAST Conference play on Wednesday with a 3-1 win at Villanova, led by junior forward Camille Trujillo (Albuquerque, N.M./St. Pius X), who scored two goals in the win. Trujillo leads the team in scoring with six goals for 12 points. Junior midfielders Ingrid Wells (Upper Montclair, N.J./Montclair) and Kelly D'Ambrisi (Trumbull, Conn./Lauralton Hall Academy) were selected to the Top Drawer Soccer Women's National Top 100 Players in the country. Wells was tabbed at No. 8 nationally, while D'Ambrisi was selected No. 62. Wells is tied for the team lead in scoring with three goals and six assists for 12 points. Wells, who was named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week last week, was the only unanimous selection to the Preseason All-BIG EAST team. She was selected to the Hermann Trophy Watch List and was tabbed a Preseason All-American selection by Soccer America.
D'Ambrisi, who was named the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week this week, is third on the team in scoring with three goals and three assists for nine points. D'Ambrisi earned weekly honors after totaling eight points in wins last weekend when she factored in five of the team's eight goals. She scored two goals and registered an assist in a 3-0 win over George Washington on Friday and then added a goal and an assist in a 5-0 win over St. Francis (Pa.). The Hoya defense, led by senior goalie Jackie DesJardin (Sunnyvale, Calif./Archbishop Mitty) has been strong, posting shutouts in three of the first four games. Georgetown gave up a goal in the first half against Villanova, ending a streak of more than 292 minutes without a goal. Georgetown has also received strong efforts from its freshman class. Kaitlin Brenn (Bridgewater, N.J./Somerville) is fourth on the team in scoring with two goals and one assist for five points, while Kailey Blain (Merrimack, N.H./Merrimack) is fifth on the team with four points and second on the team with four assists. In addition, Alexa St. Martin (Westford, Mass./Westford Academy) was named BIG EAST Rookie of the Week last week after scoring a pair of goals in the team's season-opening win at American. The defense has also had some help from the newcomers, with Blain, Emily Menges (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) and Mary Kroening (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury) all starting games in the young season. The D.C. Invitational will conclude on Monday, Sept. 6 with a pair of games. The Hoyas will host Fairfield at noon and George Mason will play American in the second game. |
