WASHINGTON - Georgetown University senior women's soccer player Mary Kroening (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury) was named the BIG EAST Conference's Defensive Player of the Week on Monday.

It is the second time this season that a Hoya player has earned league defensive player of the week honors, joining senior captain Emily Menges (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City), who was tabbed on Aug. 26.

Georgetown won a pair of games last week, beating Delaware at home on Sunday, 3-0, and posting a 2-0 road win at North Carolina State on Wednesday.

The Hoyas, ranked No. 13 by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and No. 14 by Soccer America, have won six-straight games to open the season for the third time in the last four years.

Kroening assisted on Georgetown's first goal of the game near the mid-point of the first half and scored on a header early in the second half off a corner kick.

The Hoya defensed - aided by Kroening on the back-line - has posted three-straight shutouts and limited offensive chances for opponents. Kroening is a three-year starter on the defensive unit, joined by Menges, along with seniors Colleen Dinn (Kensington, Md./Holy Cross) and Alexa St. Martin (Westford, Mass./Westford Academy).

Junior goalkeeper Emma Newins (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run) was also named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll. She was in the back, making three saves, including a pair in the second half to keep the game scoreless as the Hoyas recorded their third-straight shutout. Newins has not allowed a goal in more than 280 minutes.

Georgetown is back home for a non-league matchup on Friday, Sept. 13, hosting Yale at Shaw Field. Kickoff is slated for 3 p.m. Live video of the game will be available on the Georgetown Athletics website - - with Tom Kolker calling the action.
