Georgetown’s Defense Frustrates the Opposition in BIG EAST Women’s Soccer Victory
Washington DC – Georgetown (5-3, 1-0) opened BIG EAST play with a shutout victory against Seton Hall (3-5, 0-1), giving the homecoming crowd at North Kehoe Field their second home win in a row and extending GU’s win streak to four. Limited to few scoring opportunities, Seton Hall recorded no shots on goal for the game thanks to the tireless efforts of Georgetown defenders. Liza Yannuzzi (Westfield, N.J. / Westfield), named last week’s BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week, anchored the defense, making key plays to halt the Seton Hall attack. Goalkeeper Alexis George (Woodbury, N.J. / Haddonfield) also recorded her third shutout of the season. Thanks in part to the Hoya defense, George has allowed only one goal in four games, the lone score coming off a penalty shot.
Jessie Beers-Altman (State College, Pa. / State College), last week’s BIG EAST Co-Offensive Player of the Week, added to her goal total with the game’s first score at 17:15 with the assist going to Nicole DePalma (Thiells, N.Y. / North Rockland). Two minutes later Jen Choiniere (Merrimack, N.H. / Bishop Guertin) netted her third of the season off a Karin Ostrander (Atherton, Calif. / Menlo Atherton School) pass, pacing the Hoyas to a two goal lead. For the remainder of the match the Hoyas worked hard to break up the Seton Hall attack.
The final goal of the game was scored by DePalma when she tucked the ball inside the far post to record her third goal of the season and her third point on the afternoon.
The Hoyas travel to North Carolina to face Elon University on Sunday September 22 before heading home to resume their BIG EAST schedule against a tough Pittsburgh team. The game against the Panthers is scheduled for Friday September 27 at 3:30 p.m.
