WASHINGTON - Three members of the No. 17 Georgetown University women’s soccer team earned BIG EAST Conference honors on Monday. Senior Elizabeth Wenger (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week, while freshman forward Jenna Menta (Lincolndale, N.Y./Somers) earn BIG EAST Freshman of the Week honors. Additionally, forward Amanda Carolan (Bayville, N.J./Central Regional) earned a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll.
Wenger led the stifling Georgetown defense last week which limited opponents to just six total shots and just three on target in a pair of large-margin victories. The Hoyas (9-2-1, 3-0 BIG EAST) scored a 4-0 win at DePaul, outshooting the Blue Demons 17-2, before shutting out Seton Hall on Sunday, 5-0, limiting the Pirates to just one shot on goal. In the 2-0 week, Georgetown outshot its foes 44-6, 22-3 on target, and allowed just one corner kick.
This is Wenger’s second defensive player of the week honor this season after earning it on Aug. 21, and the second of her career. The Hoyas have won seven weekly awards this year including five on the defensive end.
Menta sparked the impressive Georgetown offense last week with two goals and an assist in wins over DePaul and Seton Hall. The rookie assisted on Carolan's insurance goal in the 43rd minute against the Blue Demons on Thursday before back-to-back goals less than a minute apart against the Pirates on Sunday.
This is Menta’s first-career weekly award. She currently has nine points on the season off of three goals and three assists to rank fourth on the squad in scoring.
Carolan was the league's goals leader with three for the Hoyas. She tallied two goals in the win at DePaul before adding a score in Georgetown's victory over Seton Hall.
This is Carolan’s first nod to the honor roll this season after earning offensive player of the week honors on Aug. 21. She has been named to the honor roll three times in her career. It is the sixth honor roll award this season for the Blue & Gray.
The Hoyas will continue BIG EAST play on Thursday as the squad hosts Creighton at Shaw Field in a 3 p.m. matchup. The game will be streamed live on the BIG EAST Digital Network with Monika Moore calling the action. Live stats will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
