Oct. 12, 2012
WASHINGTON - The lead in the BIG EAST Conference's National Division will be up for grabs on Friday, Oct. 12, when the No. 11-ranked Georgetown University women's soccer team hosts Notre Dame in a matchup of teams tied for first place. Kickoff at North Kehoe Field is slated for 3 p.m.
Live video of the game will be available on the Georgetown Athletics website - www.guhoyas.com - with Tom Kolker providing the play-by-play.
The Hoyas enter the weekend with a 12-1-2 overall record and a 6-0-1 mark in the BIG EAST. Georgetown is unbeaten in its last seven games, most recently coming off a 1-1 double overtime at Louisville and a 1-0 win at Cincinnati. GU is ranked No. 11 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll and No. 14 in the Soccer America poll.
Notre Dame enters the weekend with a 10-3-2 overall record and an identical 6-0-1 mark in league play. Like the Hoyas, the Irish opened league play with six-straight wins before settling for a 2-2 draw at home against Rutgers last weekend. ND is ranked No. 24 in the NSCAA poll and No. 23 by Soccer America.
The Hoyas improved to 12-1-2 overall last weekend led by the play of redshirt freshman women's soccer player Emma Newins (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run), who was named the BIG EAST Rookie of the Week on Monday. It was the fourth-straight week a member of the Hoyas has been named one of the league's weekly award winners.
Newins made five saves in Friday night's 1-0 win at Cincinnati as she spearheaded the Georgetown defense to its sixth-straight shutout against BIG EAST Conference opponents. On Sunday, Newins gave up a goal early in the second half in a 1-1 tie at Louisville, but was strong in goal for the Hoyas as she made five saves. The goal scored by Louisville was the first against Newins in BIG EAST play in more than six games, ending a streak of 610:20 without allowing a goal. In the first overtime period, she made a diving stop on a shot to preserve the tie.
Overall in 15 games, Newins leads the BIG EAST in goals-against average at 0.62, save percentage (85.2%) and shutouts (8.5). In seven conference games, Newins leads the league with a 0.14 goals-against average and in save percentage (93.8% and shutouts (4.5).
Georgetown sealed the win over Cincinnati on Friday when sophomore midfielder Daphne Corboz (Green Brook, N.J./Watchung Hills) sent a corner kick to the box in the 81st minute, where junior defender Mary Kroening (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury) headed it in for the go-ahead goal.
Corboz, last week's BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week, scored the team's only goal in the 1-1 tie on Sunday. She leads the BIG EAST in scoring with 15 goals and six assists for 36 points. In seven conference games, she has scored 11 goals and has three assists for 25 points.
Junior forward Kaitlin Brenn (Branchburg, N.J./Somerville) is second on the team in scoring with nine goals and seven assists for 25 points, while junior forward Colleen Dinn (Kensington, Md./Holy Cross) is third with five goals and two assists for 12 points.
Friday's match with Notre Dame will be the 20th meeting all-time between the programs, with the Fighting Irish leading the series, 16-2-1. In the last two meetings, the teams played to a 1-1 double overtime tie at Georgetown during the 2010 season and last year, Georgetown posted a 3-2 win, with former All-BIG EAST standout Samantha Baker scoring a pair of goals in the win.
Georgetown closes out the weekend on Sunday, Oct. 14, hosting DePaul. Kickoff at North Kehoe Field is slated for 1 p.m. Prior to the game, Head Coach Dave Nolan will honor the team's three seniors, defender Claire Magliola (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah), goalkeeper Hanna Monson (Buffalo Grove, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) and midfielder Christina O'Tousa (Newport Beach, Calif./Newport Harbor).
