Georgetown Softball Starts Second Day of Tournament with 9-1 Loss to Kansas
Feb. 9, 2013
WASHINGTON - With strong performances by Kansas pitchers Alex Jones and Kelsey Kessler, the Hoyas managed to score one run but were kept under control for the majority of 9-1 loss to the Jayhawks. This was Georgetown's third game of the 3-day FIU Tournament held in Miami, Fla.
For the second time in three games Georgetown was the first to put a run on the board. Freshman Samantha Giovanniello (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial) made her way around the bases after a single to left field, a sacrifice bunt and two wild pitches to give the Hoyas the early 1-0 lead. Kansas pitcher Alex Jones would settle down after the first inning and shift momentum in favor of the Jayhawks.
Kansas gained the lead in the bottom of the second with a 2-run double and would really open the door in the fourth inning where they scored six runs. Kansas loaded the bases with no outs, giving infielder Maggie Hull the opportunity to do some damage where she delivered with a grand slam for the Jayhwaks. Two more runs would be scored in the fourth with an additional run coming in the sixth inning to give Kansas nine runs on the day.
Megan Hyson (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) and Sophia Garqicevich-Almeida (Riverside, Calif./Martin Luther King) each had a hit for Georgetown and Lauren O'Leary (La Canada, Calif./La Canada) took the mound for her second start of the season, throwing three innings. Hannah Slovacek (Austin, Texas/Westlake) pitched in relief for the rest of the game.
Georgetown continues tournament play with a second game against the Jayhawks later in the day.
