WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University softball team opened the 2018 season on Friday at the FGCU Kickoff Classic in Fort Myers, Florida. The Hoyas lost a pair of games on the first day of tournament action, dropping an 8-3 loss against Memphis in the opener and later were defeated by NC State, 12-2.
Senior Theresa Kane (Mystic, Conn./Stonington) led the team at the plate in both games, going 2-for-3 at the plate in the opener against the Tigers and 3-for-3 against the Wolfpack. Against Memphis, Kane, along with junior Kelly Amen (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) and freshman NeNe Campos (Nogales, Ariz./Canyon Del Oro High School), each brought in an RBI for the Hoyas, which were all in the fourth inning.
Georgetown scored three consecutive runs in the fourth inning. The first run came from Amen after reaching first base with a straight shot towards shortstop while bases were loaded, which advanced sophomore Sera Stevens (Birmingham, Mich./Marian) to score the first run for Georgetown making it 5-1. Campos was up to the plate next with bases still loaded, getting the walk to first, which allowed sophomore Alexa Dolby (Round Hill, Va./Woodgrove) to score again for the Hoyas, 5-2. With bases still loaded, Kane ripped the ball towards center field, allowing freshman Savannah Jones (San Rafael, Calif./Terra Linda High School) to reach home plate for the first time in her college career, advancing Georgetown 5-3.
The Hoyas could not seem to score again the rest of the game, while the Tigers went on to score three more runs.
Against Memphis, junior Anna Brooks Pacha (Houston, Texas/St. John's School) started off in the circle. Pachca went 2.1 innings and struck out four, allowing five runs on the six hits until sophomore Katie Vannicola (Vienna, Va./James Madison HS) finished the last 3.2 innings in the circle. Vannicola struck out one batter, allowing three hits and three runs while taking the loss.
In GU's second game of the day against NC State, Kane brought in the two runs for the Hoyas. Georgetown broke into the scoring column in the top of the first inning. Sophomore Noelle Holiday (Bear, Del./Red Lion Christian Academy) grounded her hit to second base, allowing Kane to advance from third base to score, giving the Hoyas the lead right away, 1-0.
The Wolfpack responded with four runs in the next two innings until the top of the third inning when Holiday, again, knocked her hit out to left field, allowing Kane to score again for the Hoyas.
Freshman London Diller (Abilene, Texas/George Ranch High School) got the nod on the rubber, going 2.0 innings with six earned runs and struck out three batters. Sophomore Casey Kozack (Marlton, N.J./Bishop Esutace) took the loss for the game.
