Georgetown Softball Falls to Elon, 8-4

ELON, N.C. - Georgetown Softball Falls to Elon A costly Georgetown error contributed to a seven-run third inning for Elon, as the Phoenix defeated the Hoyas' softball team (1-1) on Saturday afternoon in GU's second game of the Elon Phoenix Tournament.
Mackensey Carter (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo) took the loss, allowing seven runs, four earned on six hits over 3.0 innings. Junior Melissa Conners (Wellington, Fla./Wellington) allowed one run on four hits over 3.0 innings of relief. Senior 3B Demetria Cipriano (Coral Springs, Fla./Coral Springs Charter) went 2-for-4 with two RBI's to lead the Hoyas offense. Carter and Kristi Preuss (LaPlata, Md./LaPlata) each had two hits for Georgetown.
The Hoyas offense struck in the first inning for the second consecutive game, scoring three runs to start quickly. Kelsie Hanson (Katy, Texas/Katy) hit a one-out single to centerfield, followed by a single from Carter. Preuss singled to drive in Carter. Cipriano would also drive in a run to give GU an early 3-0 lead.
The Phoenix answered in the third inning, bringing 11 batters to the plate, scoring seven runs on six hits. The Phoenix loaded the bases, before a throwing error allowed Elon's first two runs to cross the plate. After another run scored, Elon would again load the bases for Danielle Lafferty to clear with one swing of the bat. The grand slam gave Elon an insurmountable 7-3 lead.
Elon would score again in the fourth inning on an RBI single from Tomeka Watson. Georgetown would put one more run on the scoreboard in the top of the seventh, as Cipriano doubled down the left field line to drive in Danielle Cyr, to make the score 8-4, the eventual final score.
Georgetown resumes play in the Elon Phoenix Tournament on Sunday, taking on Rider at 11 a.m. before getting another shot at host Elon at 1:15 p.m.
