CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The Georgetown University softball team (3-3) could not keep up with Tennessee Martin, as the Skyhawks jumped to a five run lead before scoring four more runs in the fifth inning to seal a 9-1 victory in five innings.
The Hoyas managed five hits against UTM's Paij Lintz, as freshman Callie Eward (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton) scored GU's lone run in the top of the fifth inning. Melissa Conners (Wellington, Fla./Wellington) took her first loss of the season, allowing nine runs, eight earned on 15 hits over 4.0 innings.
UT Martin got on the board in the bottom of the second then added three more runs in the bottom of the third inning to take an early 4-0 lead.
Georgetown threatened in the fourth inning as Demetria Cipriano (Coral Springs, Fla./Coral Springs Charter) doubled to give the Blue and Gray two runners in scoring position, but they were unable to capitalize. The Skyhawks added another run in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 5-0 lead.
In the top of the fifth inning Eward came on as a pinch runner and eventually came around to score the Hoyas lone run. The Skyhawks scored four more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to end the game early due to the eight-run mercy rule.
The Hoyas return to action on Saturday to take on Evansville at 10 a.m.
