RALEIGH, N.C. - Kristi Preuss (LaPlata, Md./LaPlata) hit a two run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning and Mackensey Carter (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo) held on to earn her first victory as the Georgetown University softball team (5-5) defeated the Stony Brook Seawolves (3-3) in the first game of the Wolfpack Classic at NC State University.
Kelsie Hanson (Katy, Texas/Katy) stood at third base with the scored tied at one in the bottom of the fifth inning when Preuss launched her first and the team's first home run of the season to give GU a 3-1 lead. The Seawolves would answer in the top of the seventh inning with a solo homer, but Carter was able to get the last two outs to earn the win.
Carter allowed two runs on four hits, while striking out two over 7.0 complete innings in the win. Carter also went 2-for-3 at the plate.
The Hoyas got on the board first in the bottom of the fourth inning, as Carter led off with a single and Preuss and Shikara Lowe (Beaverton, Ore./Jesuit) drew walks to load the bases. A wild pitch would allow a run to cross the plate giving GU a 1-0 lead.
Stony Brook answered in the top of the fifth inning. After a lead-off single, a sacrifice bunt and sacrifice fly brought in a run to tie the score. Preuss would break the tie a half inning later to bring the Hoyas record back to .500 at 5-5.
The Hoyas return to the field on Saturday when they take on Coastal Carolina and host NC State.
