Offensive Spurt Not Enough for Softball on First Day of Florida Gulf Coast Tournament

WASHINGTON - Georgetown University softball (8-13) dropped two games against Utah (16-3) 5-1, and Florida Gulf Coast (10-13) 4-0 on Friday to open the Florida Gulf Coast Tournament in Ft. Myers, Fla.The Hoyas looked poised to emerge from a five-game losing streak on both ends against the Utes. Cara Savarese (Syosset, N.Y./Syosset) went two-for-three, with Shikara Lowe (Beaverton, Ore./Jesuit) and Megan Hyson (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) both going two-for-four. Georgetown bounced back to go eight-for-29 as a team after going one-for-24 against UCF in the second game of a doubleheader on Wednesday. Utah struck first at the top of the second due to defensive errors by the Hoyas. The Utes scored two runs to take the lead with no hits in the inning. The Blue & Gray got on base in the second with a single from Lowe, but she was left on base. Utah added a run to their lead in the third to make the score 3-0. Georgetown got on the board in the fifth with singles from Hyson, Lowe, and Mackensey Carter (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo). Lowe advanced Hyson to score. Hyson pitched six innings with seven strikeouts against Utah. In the evening game, Savarese singled to left field, followed by a single from Jordan Hansen (Omaha, Neb./Millard West) to start the second inning. Taylor Koenig (Akron, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) was walked to load the bases, but Georgetown failed to advance runners home. Florida Gulf Coast took a 1-0 lead at the top of the third. FGCU extended their lead in the fifth with a grand slam homerun with two outs left in the inning. Lowe posted a consistent offensive performance on the day, going four-for-seven combined against Utah and Florida Gulf Coast. Hansen went one-for-two while Elyse Graziano (Floral Park, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy), Savarese and Samantha Findling (Norcross, Ga./Norcross) went one-for-three against the Eagles. Lauren O’Leary (La Canada, Calif./La Canada) pitched seven innings with twelve strikeouts. The Hoyas return to action in the Florida Gulf Coast Tournament tomorrow with games against St. Francis (Pa.) and Howard. The games are scheduled for 9 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., respectively.
