PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The Georgetown University softball team (15-24, 0-7 BIG EAST) took an early lead, but fell victim to Pittsburgh's two-run third inning, as the Hoyas fell to the Panthers, 2-1 in game one of a BIG EAST doubleheader at Vartabedian Field on Wednesday afternoon.
Senior designated player Mackensey Carter (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo) drove in the Hoyas lone run, while freshman pitcher Lauren O'Leary (La Canada, Calif./La Canada) tossed 6.0 innings, allowing four runs on two hits, while striking out five and walking one.
O'Leary took the loss, giving up both runs in the Panthers third inning, despite holding Pittsburgh scoreless in the other five frames.
Georgetown took an early lead, as Taylor Koenig reached on a fielder's choice, moved to second when Shikara Lowe drew a one-out walk and scored on Carter's single to take a 1-0 lead.
The Panthers answered in the bottom of the third, as a two-run triple put Pittsburgh in front for good, as the team's held each other scoreless over the last 3.5 innings.
